Gerry W Brown

November 24, 1952 – October 9, 2021

Guanacaste Province, Liberia, Costa Rica

Gerry W Brown, 68, journeyed into the spirit world on Oct 9th 2021 after a short battle with cancer.

Gerry was born in Casco, Maine to Frank Gilbert and Louise Brown. He grew up in Raymond, Maine.

Gerry was an avid sailor and spent many years on Casco Bay aboard his boat “The Reach.” He also made several trips sailing the eastern seaboard with his friend Horace Beck.

Gerry’s love of traveling began as a child reading National Geographic Magazine. He was most attracted to the wild landscape of Costa Rica. In 2013 he and his wife Susan made their first trip there. They were so enamored by the Pura Vida way of life that they decided to retire in 2017 and make Costa Rica their permanent home. They became residents in 2019, building their casa in the tiny village of Nuevo Colon in the province of Guanacaste. Life in Costa Rica included walking Matapalo Beach, tending to the wide variety of bananas growing on the property, raking fallen leaves from the huge almond tree (a never ending task) and sitting in the courtyard with a cup of coffee taking in the sounds of the jungle.

A typical Sagittarius, Gerry made friends wherever he went, enjoyed lively discussions about spirituality and philosophy and spoke his mind when faced with injustices. He did not hesitate to converse in Spanish, appreciating when Ticos corrected him which helped his learning.

He is survived by his loving wife Susan Summerson of Costa Rica, his daughter Heather Reynolds (Darrin) of Harrison, ME, His grandchildren Hadley Hurd of Portland, ME, Malachy Spencer Hurd and Duncan Hurd both of Harrison, ME. His brothers “Butch” Brown (Barbara) and Daniel Brown (Lori) both of Raymond, ME and his sister Sandra Brown of Damairscotta, ME and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents “Gib” and Louise (Andrews) Brown.
