life story

In Loving Memory

Gary Curtis Walstrom died in the early morning hours on Thursday, October 16, 2025, with his daughters by his side, in St Paul, MN, after a heroic battle with cancer.

Gary was born to Lowell Walstrom and Doris (Dahl) Walstrom on March 10th, 1947 in Montevideo MN. He grew up on the family farm in Maynard, MN. It was on that family farm that his parents and Grandpa Walstrom fostered his love of horses. Gary told very fond memories of all the horses and ponies that Grandpa Walstrom would bring him to ride and then sell. That love of horses and buying and selling them lasted him a lifetime. As a young child Gary loved to play ‘cowboys and Indians’ and cousins report Gary was always the ‘hero’.

Gary graduated from Maynard High School in 1965, where he played basketball, football and participated in High School Rodeo. After graduation he enlisted into the US Navy, leaving August 23rd, 1965 for San Diego, CA for basic training. He then went on serve actively during Vietnam.

Gary had a deep love for his children Travis, Michaela and Britta, his grandchildren Samantha, Chance, Skyler, Montana,Lyla and Aria, a good horse, a good dog and the open road. Driving the open road, hauling horses or trailers was good for his soul. His family will deeply miss his calls of travel updates that always included which mile marker he just passed on the interstates of the US.

There was not a child or animal that did not gravitate towards Gary. He was patient, kind, soft spoken with a kind heart. All of his grandkids made a dollar when they fell off their horse, but got back on.

Gary is survived by his children, Travis Walstom, of Shakopee, MN, Michaela (Jim) Vinton of Glenville, MN, Britta Walstrom (Svihel) of Maple Grove, MN, 6 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren and multiple cousins and friends.

A Celebration of Life for Gary will be held at a later date with location to be determined.
