Evelyn “Evie” Garnet Newland, 96, of Mora, Minnesota, formerly of Zerkel, Minnesota, passed away on Friday, November 1, 2024, at St. Clare Living Community in Mora, Minnesota.

Evelyn was born on January 5, 1928, at home on the Skjefte farm in Dunn County, North Dakota to Andrew and Hulda (Torgerson) Skjefte.

She attended a one room schoolhouse in Dunn County North Dakota and finished through 8th grade at Minerva School. During WWII, she did her part in the War Time Effort working in California where they produced paint for the military. Shortly the war ended, and she moved back to Minnesota. After returning home, she met and married Monroe Newland on September 1, 1946, in Shevlin, MN. They later moved to western North Dakota where Monroe worked in the oil field. Evelyn stayed home to raise their six children, Marlys, Larry, Luanne, Jimmy, Susan, and Tom. In 1964 the family moved back to Minnesota and they settled in Zerkel, where they lived through 1987.

Evelyn and Monroe retired in 1982 spending time enjoying their children and grandchildren. She enjoyed her hobbies; painting, tending to her flower garden, raising chickens and geese, and bird watching. Evelyn loved the Lord and was very involved in Rice Free Lutheran Church.

Later in life Evelyn traveled around the country. She spent several years in Arizona with her daughter Marlys. She eventually settled near her sister Ina in Finley, North Dakota. In 2001 she left North Dakota for Mora, Minnesota near her daughters Luanne and Susan where she spent the rest of her life.

Evelyn is survived by her children, Larry (Caryll) Newland, Luanne (Robert) Herder, Susan (Warren) Wyman, and Tom (Susie) Newland; 17-grandchildren; 51-great grandchildren; 27-great great grandchildren; 3-great great great grandchildren; and many other loved family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Monroe Newland; her parents, Andrew and Hulda Skjefte; her in-Laws, Charles and Rose Newland; her daughter, Marlys Hanson and son, James Newland; her grandsons, Jared Newland and Brett Newland; and her siblings, Gladys, Arnold, Hazel, Ina, Viola, Milton, and Merlin.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will be held at Rice Free Lutheran Cemetery in Zerkel Minnesota.
