life story

"Well done, good and faithful servant." — Matthew 25:23

Eva Elisabeth Grefe, age 89, of Cottage Grove, Minnesota, peacefully entered into eternal rest on June 21, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family and the promise of her Savior, Jesus Christ.

Born on May 5, 1937, and raised in Malkomes, Germany, Eva demonstrated courage and devotion at a young age when she immigrated to the United States in 1959 to marry the love of her life, Larry. Their story began when Larry was stationed in Bad Hersfeld, Germany, where the two met and fell in love. Their marriage was a remarkable testament to faithfulness and commitment, spanning 66 years and serving as an inspiration to all who knew them.

Together, they built a life centered on faith, family, and community. A devoted Lutheran and member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church on St. Paul’s East Side, Eva’s faith guided her throughout her life. She found great comfort and strength in God’s Word and lived her faith through kindness, service, and compassion toward others.

Throughout her working years, Eva dedicated herself to serving others through a variety of roles, including managing the school lunch program at East St. Paul Lutheran School. Her warm smile, generous heart, creative cooking, and welcoming nature brought joy to countless people over the years.

Eva loved camping and nature, spending time with family and friends, and serving as a Girl Scout leader. She embraced her life in America with gratitude and curiosity, appreciating the country’s unique spirit, diversity, and opportunity while never forgetting the strength and heritage of her German roots.

Beyond her work and family, Eva formed lasting friendships and was often found visiting with friends and welcoming children into her home. Her home was a place of warmth, laughter, and acceptance.

Eva was greeted at Heaven's gates by her parents, Justus and Katerina Göbel; her seven siblings; her brother-in-law, Melvin Grefe, and his wife, Aeriel; and her dear friends Fred and Nancy Kennicutt and JoAnne Radmer. She is survived by her beloved husband of 66 years, Larry; her daughter, Evelyn (Jeff) Blade; her son, Glen Grefe; her grandson, Brandon (Deandra) Emmons; her step-grandchildren, Ricky (Henriette) Blade and Robbie Blade; her great-granddaughter, Bella; and many other extended family members and friends who will cherish her memory.

A visitation will be held from 10:00–11:00 a.m., followed by an 11:00 a.m. funeral service at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 655 Forest Street, St. Paul. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

Special thanks to Optage Hospice and the staff at Timber Hills Memory Care for their kindness and care.
