In Loving Memory

Elmer F. Haas, age 90, of Andover, MN passed away with his family by his side at the VA Hospital in St. Cloud, MN on Thursday, June 13, 2024. He was born May 24, 1934 in Finlayson, MN to Arleigh and Louise Haas.

Elmer was raised on the farm along with his brother Ervin. When he was 18 years old, he moved to Minneapolis with his buddy Carl to work and earn money. He got a job at S & M driving truck in the city. The shop was directly across the street from the Bel Aire Cafe near Loring Park. This is where Elmer went for his coffee breaks and to chat with cute waitress, Esther. He would pick her up at the end of her shift on his Harley.

He was drafted into the US Army from 1957-1959, stationed in Ft. Knox, Kentucky. He was trained to be a mechanic and worked on tanks. Being a diesel mechanic became his career until he retired. Esther made many weekend trips to visit over the next 2 years. They were married in December, 1961 and lived in Spring Lake Park until 1965 when their home was destroyed by a tornado. They moved to Andover that fall and lived there together for 58 years.

Elmer enjoyed hunting and fishing. He went on many fly-in fishing trips to Canada and a few to Lake Michigan for Salmon. He took a gazillion trips up north to Kabetogama, Lake Vermillion and Crane Lake to name a few. If he needed something, he made it, like a trailer, a snowmobile or a go-cart for the kids. In addittion to going snowmobiling and 4-wheeling, he also hauled his dune buggy out to California a number of times to go dune buggying with his son Jack at Glamis and Dumont Dunes. He also attended many threshing shows where you may have seen him driving his Allis Chalmers tractor in the parade.

If you lived within driving distance, you've probably had something fixed by Elmer. There were always people stopping by to see if Elmer could get something fixed or running for them. And then you would sit in the garage and have a Buckhorn.

Elmer is survived by his children, Randy Haas, Ron (Dawn) Haas, Jack Haas, Jill Haehn and Dan Haas; grandchildren: Jake Haas, John Haas, Alyse (Juan) Ortiz, Madeline (Matt) Faul, Caroline Haas, Rachel Haas, Kyle (Mayra) Haas, Kayla (Dylan) Barkand, Abby (James) Haehn, Andy Haehn, Bethany Haehn, Anna Haehn; great grandchildren: Jack Z. Haas, Russell Faul, Walter Faul, Georgia Faul, Rocio Ortiz, Emilio Ortiz, Eleanor Haehn (Kaiser).
