A life devoted to family, children, and friends
A dear friend and neighbor, Beth Vogel, passed away peacefully at home on June 4, at the age of sixty-nine.
As a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner with an MPH, Beth was enrolled in a nursing doctorate program at Georgia State when diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in December 2023.
Although stunned by the diagnosis, Beth immediately confronted the impending and grueling challenge with a determined and optimistic spirit for two-and-a-half years until her death.
Beth and her family, husband Charley, oldest son Andrew, and youngest son Kurt (along with beloved golden retrievers over the years) lived in Decatur since 1994. She and her husband Charley were married for over 40 years.
She took tremendous pride in the achievements of her sons. Her greatest motivation during treatment was to attend Andrew’s wedding in June 2024, to his wife Kelsey Kubelick, and to witness Kurt’s ongoing success at Kennesaw State University.
Beth served as a pediatric nurse practitioner at Egleston (now Children’s Hospital of Atlanta), specializing in pediatric brain tumors. She connected deeply with these families, providing not just clinical expertise, but kindness and compassion.
Later, she served as the director of the pediatric program for Hospice Atlanta, supporting children at end of life. Throughout her professional career, she was driven to help families through difficult diagnoses, serving each patient with genuineness and kindness.
She was a beloved aunt to her nieces Dana Thomson and Natalie Friend Slankard. She enjoyed spending time with her extended family and playing with her great-nieces and great-nephews. Her passion for caring and teaching young children remained steadfast throughout her life, both personally and professionally.
Beth is also survived by her brother Kevin Carroll, as they both provided support to each other through the years.
She was an active member of Central Presbyterian Church, serving as both an elder and a deacon. She was grateful for the support of so many Central members, and the wonderful impact the Church had on her whole family.
In her final months, she relished the close time spent with dear friends—all of whom were instrumental in providing transportation and support during countless chemotherapy treatments.
In keeping with her wishes and aligned with her thoughtful, selfless, and giving nature, her body was donated to further education at Emory School of Medicine.
