About Earl

Earl Elroy Tiggemann, 92, of Cass Lake, MN died Monday, January 22, 2024 at Sanford Bemidji Medical Center.

Earl was born December 5, 1931 in Riverview Gardens, Missouri, the son of John and Lillian (Twillman) Tiggemann. He served our country in the U.S. Army as an MP from 1949 to 1952 with active duty in Korea for ten months.

In 1954, Earl married the love of his life, Verlyn Stoltz. He worked as a police officer in Clear Lake, IA for several years prior to moving to Minnesota, where together they owned and operated Birch Ridge Resort on Leech Lake from 1971 until 1995 when his daughter, Ann (Frank) Alianello took over the resort. Earl cherished the time spent with family, goofy games we’d play at the table and of course coffee hour with dessert.

Earl always had an ear that was ready to listen and time to chat with his customers at the resort. People enjoyed spending time with him. Earl’s favorite hobby was tinkering in his garage workshop. He was very resourceful and could fix about anything. He built their house and helped construct the Otter Tail Peninsula Town Hall and the new Trinity Lutheran Church in Cass Lake, MN. He also helped orchestrate the formation of Otter Tail Peninsula Township, where he served as a supervisor and board member for 35 years. In addition, he served as a US forest service fire warden for the township. Earl was a member of the American Legion for 52 years.

Earl is survived by Verlyn, his wife of 69 years; son Steven (Rosemary) Tiggemann; daughters Lori (Erik) Sola and Ann (Frank) Alianello; grandchildren Gillian Tiggemann, Ian (Sarah) Tiggemann, Cassandra (Scott) Kupsky; Jessica and Josh Sola; Gina (Josh) Nielsen and Joe Alianello; great-grandchildren; Stephen, Charlotte and Lucy Kupsky; Leah, Anna and Abby Tiggemann; Dominic and Brody Alianello; Ridge Nielsen.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers John E., Alvin and Vernon.
