OBITUARY
In loving memory of brother and indigenous villager
Dr. Joseph WAI Chung Fai
Joseph WAI Chung-Fai, age 59, passed away suddenly on 14 March, 2016 at home in Zephyr, Ontario, Canada, surrounded by his stepson-in-law Lam Ying-Tai and his flight-attendant friend.
Son of the late Chik-Sang and late Nancy Wai; brother of Kin-Chung, Yin-Fei, Yin-Yee, Kin-Hung and the late Yin-Ling. They are indigenous of Tai Wai Village in Shatin, Hong Kong.
Jo attended Tang King Po School founded by the Salesians. He earned bachelor’s degree in physics from Imperial College in London, U.K. and doctoral degree from State University of New York under the auspice of Dr. Richard Gonsalves in 1988.
He was a theoretical particle physicist and most passionate about research. After working for County NatWest as financial analyst, he returned to postdoctoral work in SINICA, Taipei from 1991-1995. Thereafter he was involved with restructuring of companies in Hong Kong and became one of the major shareholders in Culturecom. Jo was CEO of Opes Asia Development Limited from 2007-2011.
He enjoyed retirement as a gardener and planted a thousand tulips and numerous peonies, with uncountable herbs and perennials for four seasons. With the help of three teenagers – Delon, Anderson and Daniel – he planted a vineyard and made wine. His ice wine was in demand among family and friends. Weeks before his death, Jo ventured into building a cabin by the side of the seven-acre pond. Completion date was set for August. A Facebook fanatic, he made eight posts on the social media only a few hours before death.
Jo is survived by his wife, Yvonne Chan Shuk-King, his stepchildren Clarissa and Natalie, his stepson-in-law Lam Ying-Tai; his sisters-in-law Yuen-Ching, Shui-Ying and Hong-Mei; brothers-in-law Fung Wan-Kong, Alex Chan and the late Condy Wong; his nephews King-Yin, Wai-Yin, William, Julian, Delon and Ming-Hin; his nieces Deki and Elizabeth.
