Dorothy Gubrud, 83, of Shevlin, Minnesota died on Wednesday, January 18, 2023, at Cornerstone Nursing and Rehab in Bagley, Minnesota.

Dorothy was born to parents Eugene (Shorty) and Dorothy Bromaghin on August 17th, 1939. Her lifelong nickname was “Tookie.”

She grew up on a farm north of Shevlin with her parents, two brothers Frank and Dennis and baby sister Diedre who passed away at 13 months.

Dorothy was a member of the Landstad Lutheran Church where she was Baptized and confirmed. She attended elementary school in Shevlin and later attended Bagley High School where she graduated in 1957.

In April of 1957, just before graduation, she married the love of her life Orville Richard Gubrud.

They spent time in Kansas while Orville was in the Army before coming back to Minnesota where they lived in Minneapolis, then Fridley for many years before moving back up north to Shevlin.

Dorothy worked at Donaldsons in Minneapolis as well as Honeywell before moving back to Shevlin in 1979. They bought the old Shevlin dance hall and began working on it to turn it into a grocery store which was called Gubrud Hartz. They ran the store for a few years before selling it and began building their home north of Shevlin in the pines.

Dorothy also worked in Bemidji at Lake County clothing, several bookkeeping jobs which included her favorite for Gubrud Construction and the Super 8 Motel before retiring.

One of Dorothy’s many passions in life was knitting, crocheting, sewing and reading, oh how she loved her books! She knitted or crocheted blankets, hats or booties for every baby in the family. She sewed all of her kids’ clothes until they were teenagers and made blankets or afghans for all of them.

She was so talented, but Dorothy’s greatest passion was cooking and baking. She made the best potato salad and made it for every picnic or get together. Her favorite thing to do was bake and hang out in the kitchen, that was her “place.” No one ever stopped over at their house without having cookies, cake or her famous banana bread.

Her family was the most important thing to her, her kids, grandkids and great grandchildren were her pride and joy. She looked forward to visits from any and all of them and holding the babies would light up her face, even in her last few days. Dorothy was well known to all for her great sense of style, always matching her shoes to her purses!

Dorothy is survived by her four children: Melanie (Warren) of Coon Rapids, MN, children Zachery, Gena, Amanda. Natalie (Rodney) of Shevlin, MN children Deanna, BJ, Jes. Karla (Pat) of Waubun, MN children Heidi, Aletta, Scott, Holly, Melissa, Byllie Jean, Darin (Lisa) of Shevlin children Cole, Lacey, Hunter.

Preceded in death by her husband of 56 years and 11 months, her parents, her infant sister and numerous brother in laws and sister in laws.

Location: Landstad Free Lutheran Church in Shevlin, Minnesota with a visitation one hour prior with Pastor Micah Carpenter officiating. Interment will be held at Bagley City Cemetery in Bagley, Minnesota.
