About Lefty
David “Lefty” Sylvester Anderson, 84, of Park Rapids, passed away peacefully on March 8, 2025, in Glenwood, MN.
Lefty was born in Litchfield, MN, on October 25, 1940, to Einar and Judith (Peterson) Anderson. He spent his early years living in Nevis, MN, before moving to Park Rapids.
A proud graduate of Park Rapids High School in 1958, Lefty answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the U.S. Navy on March 26, 1959. He dedicated four years to military service before being honorably discharged on March 26, 1963. Following his time in the Navy, Lefty worked for U.S. Steel Supply in Chicago, IL. While in Chicago, Lefty sang bass with the Chicago Chord of Trade Barbershop Quartet.
Upon returning home to Park Rapids, Lefty continued his love for barbershop music and directed the Barbershop Chorus. While in Park Rapids, he was employed at Headwaters Golf Course and Pine Manor Treatment Center. Beyond his professional life, Lefty was a man full of passions. He found joy in fishing, bowling, golfing, snowmobiling, motorcycling, reading, and singing at special events.
As a true patriot, he served as a commander of the American Legion Post #212 for four years and continued to be actively involved in the Legion until his health declined. One of his favorite pastimes was leading the Legion Riders on their weekly trike rides. His leadership extended to building the Park Rapids High School Website and organizing two all-school reunions. Lefty was recognized as Hubbard County’s Outstanding Senior Citizen in 2018. In 2024, he had the honor of serving as the Grand Marshal for the Park Rapids 4th of July Parade. He also enjoyed camaraderie with friends in the Secret Dude’s Snowmobile Club.
Lefty’s humor, generosity, and deep love for his friends, family, and community will be profoundly missed. His legacy of service and friendship will live on in the many lives he touched.
Dave is survived by his soulmate of 26 years, Loie Nordman of Villard, MN; “Daughters” Nancy (Steve) Hoffmann of Glenwood MN, Carrie (Brian) Smith of Milton GA, and Amy (Tom) Spychalla of Starbuck MN; 7 grandchildren Heidi (Caleb) Greene, Jon (Mary) Hoffmann, Lauren (Austin) Smith, Lindsey (Jonathan) Parent, Jared Smith, Jenna Smith and Ike Spychalla; 6 great grandchildren Beckett, Etta, Lottie, Arlo, Rosie and Ava Marie; nephews Rick (Tammy) Peterson and Roger (Amy) Peterson and their families.
