David A. Babcock
April 5, 1948 – December 29, 2022
Lakeville, MN, USA
It is with incredible sadness that we announce the passing of David A. Babcock of Lakeville, MN (formerly Minneapolis, MN) after a long and difficult battle with cancer at Methodist Hospital on December 29th, 2022.
David was born in Minneapolis, MN in 1948, the son of Don and Dorothy Babcock. He was the fourth of nine children, and grew up in the Powderhorn Park neighborhood.
David attended college at St. Cloud State University, double majoring in psychology and sociology. While there, he started working during the summers for the city of Minneapolis as a truck driver. He got hooked, and after graduation worked for the city his entire 40+ year professional career; eventually retiring as Director of Public Works, Fleet Services. He was a life-long lover of music. In his earlier years he enjoyed photography and working on antique cars.
David was an incredibly kind and wonderful person. He always looked for the best in people, and would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. He always wanted to help whenever he could. He loved nothing better than to be surrounded by family, and would host events at every opportunity.
He was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2015. For almost eight years he fought the disease, trying every new treatment that he could. During those years he was also diagnosed with two other kinds of cancer (head/neck and prostate) but incredibly shrugged them off as if they were nothing. He spent endless hours at the Mayo and Park Nicollet searching for solutions, and well outlasted the odds doing so. Unfortunately the battle proved too much, and he passed peacefully away in the company of those he loved.
David was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers (Douglas and Michael). He is survived by his wife Catherine, children Ben (wife Lauren), Angela, Sarah, Frank, step daughters Catianne (husband Justin), and Angele. He is also survived by grandchildren Zaria, Hunter, Mira, and Mariah, along with his siblings Mary Kosiba (husband Leo), Daniel, Stephen (wife Kathy), John "Jack" (wife Debbie), Dona Dillman (husband Pat), and Dominic - and also many nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Remembrances of David or charitable donations for the research of multiple myeloma are requested in lieu of flowers.
