Daniel Joseph Vernig

Daniel Joseph Vernig

Age 68, of Delano, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 12, 2026, at Valora of Orono in Orono, Minnesota.

Daniel was born on November 2, 1957, in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, to Leslie Vernig and Dorothy Duerst. He grew up on Vernig Road alongside his siblings, cousins, and extended family, creating lifelong memories on the family farm.

As a young man, Daniel worked at the Prairie Diner and graduated from Sun Prairie High School in 1976. He began his career at the Oscar Mayer plant before surviving a devastating motorcycle accident shortly after high school that left him in a coma for several days. His recovery was a testament to his strength and determination, qualities that would continue to define him throughout his life.

Daniel later moved to Minnesota, where he attended Metropolitan State University and built a successful career as an accountant. He married the love of his life, Susan, and together they raised three daughters: Kristina, Teresa, and Sarah.

Following a long and dedicated career, Daniel retired at the age of 62 and spent his retirement years in Delano, Minnesota.

Daniel will be remembered for his infectious smile, striking blue eyes, quick wit, and ability to make anyone laugh. He never met a stranger and could effortlessly strike up a conversation wherever he went. He loved gathering family around the table, preparing meals, and sharing stories. One of his greatest joys was teaching his children the value of hard work, practical skills, and perseverance. An avid outdoorsman, Daniel enjoyed fishing for sunnies from his boat and spending time on the water. He also cherished returning home to Wisconsin, where he could reconnect with family, attend polka dances at McGovern's, and celebrate the traditions he loved - like CornFest. Above all else, family was the center of Daniel’s life.

Daniel is survived by his daughters, Kristina Lorinser (children: Noah & Stella), Teresa Starke (Husband: Mike Starke, Children: Kinsley, Beckham, Oakland and Maverick), and Sarah Bakken (Husband: Dylan, Children: Monty and Ivory); his siblings, Dave Vernig, Steve Vernig, and Debbie Porter. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie Vernig and Dorothy Duerst.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Catholic Church. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the church prior to the service. Burial will immediately follow at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Cemetery.

Daniel’s warmth, humor, resilience, and unwavering love for his family will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew him.
