life story

Daniel De Silva Kaplowitz was born in Manhattan, NY on January 26, 1942. He passed away on December 11, 2023, at 81 years old. He is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Mavis Short; son David Kaplowitz of London, England; daughter Zara Kaplowitz of Edison, New Jersey; stepdaughter Susan Johnson of Minneapolis, MN; stepson Boyd Epeneter of Minneapolis, MN; step-granddaughters Brittany Johnson of New York City, NY and Molly Johnson of Atlanta, Ga.

Dan graduated from Rutgers University in 1963. He was an ROTC graduate and then joined the Army that same year. He served 2 tours of duty in the Vietnam War. He stayed in the military until 1973 when he was honorably discharged. He received several medals of accommodation including a Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and many others.

Dan married Mavis in 1996 at a beach ceremony in Florida. They lived there for almost 30 years while they both delivered newspapers for several newspaper companies. They enjoyed playing Scrabble, Cribbage and visiting Sanibel Island.

One area of Dan's life that meant a lot to him was his time spent volunteering at The Soup Kitchen of Boynton Beach. He served on the Board of Directors for over 20 years. He and Mavis were weekly volunteers driving the van and picking up food at local grocery stores and restaurants. The work and mission of The Soup Kitchen is still active today and making a difference in the lives of those they serve.

Dan was known for his love of all types of music, books, sports, and great vocabulary. You may even have found yourself being corrected from time to time.

Dan and Mavis moved to Minnesota at the end of 2021 to be near family. He handled the snow and winter like a champ.

Dan was loved by his family and dear friends. He will be missed by all who knew him.

A special and heartfelt thank you to all the staff at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center who cared for Dan in his last days.
