life story

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dale Robert Spence, 63, of Andover, Minnesota. Born to Bob and Mayme Spence on January 16th, 1963, in Crystal, Minnesota. Dale was a devoted husband, father, and proud grandfather, whose greatest joy in life was spending time with those he loved most. He was proceeded in death by his father, Robert Andrew Spence, and mother, Mayme Ruth Spence. Dale is survived by his loving wife, Sue; his daughter, Kristine Olson (Eric Olson); his son, Andy Spence (Sam Spence); and four grandchildren, Hunter (13), Loreali (6), Charlotte (8), and Spencer (4); as well as many of his extended family. He was known for his love and devotion to his family, loyalty to friends, slightly over-par golf game (par, if you asked him), love of a slow cruise around the lake and secret fishing spots, notorious DIY craftsman whose aim was always “doing it right the first time”, and famous for his big booming laugh that you could hear clear across a crowded room.

Dale was a strong, reliable, and extremely skilled craftsman who held pure pride and joy in his work. A self-educated man who put himself through “YouTube college” and graduated with at least 3 self-professed degrees - plumbing, electrical, and masonry. Some of his greatest works can be found at the family cabin on Smith Lake – his second home almost every weekend. Over the past 2.5 years, he put all his spare time into his largest project to date: construction of the new garage, cottage, and full renovation of the cabin. For so many of his family and friends, the cabin holds many amazing memories of Dale, and it will continue to hold a special place in the hearts of everyone who knew him.

Dale could always be found at any of his 3 favorite places – at home with his wife (watchin’ the hockey game!), at the cabin “relaxing” (more like working away in Grandpa’s construction site), or at his grandkids’ special events – hockey games, dance recitals, and softball games. His greatest pride was watching his kids and grandkids grow and play.

Dale will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and dedication to his family that will be cherished always.

A Celebration of Dale’s Life will be held on June 28th at Pub 42 in New Hope, MN, from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm (or Last Call).
