About Betty Ann
During the early morning hours of Saturday, December 4, 2021, Betty Ann (Dahl) Harmon slipped these bonds of earth and walked into the arms of her Lord and Savior.
Betty Ann was born on March 19, 1930, to Elizabeth Ann (Gurley) and Bennie T. Dahl, the fifth of eight children. She grew up on the family farm just east of Bagley, where she and her siblings learned the value of hard labor as they worked together to make ends meet during the Great Depression.
She attended Bagley Schools and was forced to drop out after the eighth grade, a regret she would remedy years later when she would obtain her GED.
As a young woman, she went to work as a waitress at Lundmark’s Café and Whitey’s Café, among other places. She met her future husband, Alvin Harmon, while rooming with his sister, Carol. The couple married on December 31, 1957.
Together, they welcomed Eugene, Yvonne, Timothy, and Debra. In the early 1960s, Betty realized that something was missing from her life, and she began attending the Congregational Church in Bagley, along with her three oldest children. Under the leadership of Pastor Phillip Van Wynen, Betty heard the gospel for the first time. She accepted Christ as her Savior and committed her life to him.
Through the years, Betty served as a Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School leader, and Release Time teacher and a Deaconess. She went on to become a charter member of the Berean Baptist Church and later found a home at Grace Chapel, where she became a member in the late 1990s. She and her husband, Alvin, formed a special bond with Pastor Chris Conger, who conducted weekly Bible studies in their home for several years.
In addition to raising her family and providing endless breads, cookies, donuts and other treats, Betty cleaned the Bagley Dental building for several years, as well as the First National Bank. She took pride in her work, and always went above and beyond.
She wrote poetry, studied the Bible, was an avid reader of Christian fiction, and loved seek-a-words and crossword puzzles. She loved playing Rook and Pit with her family. She was a talented seamstress who sewed clothing for her children throughout their childhoods. Betty was generous to a fault, and nothing brought more joy than giving gifts at Christmas.
Betty had an incredible green thumb and could revive even the most desperately in need plants. In her younger days, Betty raised roses and had some of the most amazingly colorful blooms. She enjoyed gardening and spent many days canning the produce.
When her children were young, Betty enjoyed the mini vacations to cabins, as well as camping trips and thoroughly enjoyed fishing in the summertime. She enjoyed traveling, and took many trips in her lifetime, including a trip to California in 2015, when she saw the Pacific Ocean for the first time.
She was proud of each of her children, and her grandchildren provided some of her greatest joys. Each of her granddaughters have special memories of their time with Grandma. She will be remembered for her genuine smiles when any of her favorite (family) people entered the room.
Betty was the heart of her family. Her strong faith in God’s abiding love will always be cherished. Her influence on the lives of her family will live on.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin, her brothers, Oliver, Earl, Bennie and John, and sisters, Isabel, and Mary.
She will be greatly missed by her children: Eugene, Yvonne, Timothy (Isabelle) and Debra; sister Donna Oslund; sisters-in-law Carol Olsen, Carrie Harmon, and Lucille Dahl; brother-in-law Johnny H. Johnson; “adopted sons” Chris Conger and Curt Fultz; granddaughters Krissy (Teri) Averill, Justine Harmon, Kendrah Platow, Kaitlyn Martine and Gabriella Harmon; five great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
It is the comfort of knowing she is with her Lord and Savior that makes her passing bearable.
