About Tony

On Friday, July 5, 2024, Anthony Paul Campbell (62) unexpectedly, but peacefully passed away in his sleep at his home in St. Paul, MN. His passing followed a day enjoying the July Fourth holiday where he partook of his favorite pastime - watching the Twins win a game at Target Field.

Anthony was born on August 17, 1961, in Decatur, IL. He was the oldest child of Paul M. and Ann A. Campbell; they preceded him in death.

Tony (as he was known in his younger days) grew up in Decatur’s West End where he was one of the few to attend both Woodrow Wilson Junior High as an elementary student and as a junior high student. A member of the class of 1979, Tony attended Douglas MacArthur High School.

As an adult Anthony lived in Illinois, Minnesota, and Indiana. Ultimately, Minnesota, the “Land of 10,000 Lakes” and everything else it has to offer, lured him back and Anthony forever called it home.

Anthony had a lengthy career with Cub Foods/Jerry’s Enterprises, Inc. in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, serving them in several capacities throughout the many years of his employment.

Always a champion of the underdog, Anthony manifested this in myriad ways throughout his life. As a child he frequently rescued stray animals; at one point he even brought home a horse. He was sorely disappointed when he wasn’t able to keep it. Seven year-old Tony didn’t understand why a horse couldn’t live in a 3-bedroom suburban home. As an adult, social justice was near and dear to Anthony’s heart; he believed everyone deserved equal economic, political, and social rights and opportunities. Anthony was especially passionate about racial equality and justice; Black Lives Matter was a cause he actively and avidly supported.

Baseball in general and the St. Louis Cardinals in particular were Anthony’s perennial favorites, but he also enjoyed many other sports having played rugby as a youth. Anthony enjoyed nature and the outdoors. He was known to take lengthy walks with no destination in mind “just to see what was out there.” In many ways Anthony had simple tastes - give him a good cup of coffee, a comfortable chair, and an exciting topic to discuss and he was happy for hours.

One of Anthony’s fondest memories was a high school hiking and mountain climbing trip to the Grand Tetons of Western Wyoming. As an adult he loved to vacation there where he revered the soaring mountains, the sparkling lakes, and the varied wildlife of the surrounding area. He said it was a place where he felt the freest and found his greatest peace. Following cremation, Anthony’s ashes will be spread amongst the majesty of the Grand Tetons.

Survivors include his son, Andrew Campbell; sister, Jane (Sam) Faggetti; brother, Michael (Milissa) Campbell; sister-in-law, Wendy Campbell; Aunt, Mary Ann Morris; Cousins, Todd (Heidi) Morris, Brian Morris, and Leanna (Chris) Sisson; several nieces and nephews; and many beloved friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by grandparents, Russ and Eileen Morris; sister Laura Campbell; brothers, Matthew and Robert Campbell; and uncle, Rich Morris.
