His hobbies were gardening many types of flowers and vegetables. He provided veggies to everyone. He loved cutting wood, mowing the lawn so it looked perfect, fishing, hunting and visiting with people at the Lazy X and later at his home. He enjoyed driving around and looking for deer and checking the crops. He also enjoyed farming, raising animals, driving fast cars, watching westerns and politics on TV.
He started working at an early age, first accompanying his father and grandfather, thrashing grain, working on the family farm and other jobs around Gonvick. As an adult, he worked on large construction jobs primarily doing concrete. He worked at the nuclear plant here in Minnesota, the uranium mines in Wyoming, a smelting plant in Montana, the gasification plant in Beulah, North Dakota, the papermills in Grand Rapids and Duluth, and ended his career working in the pipeline industry. He put everything into his work and expected for the same from people that worked for and with him. He was proud of his accomplishments and liked to talk about the various areas he had worked in the United States. He is remembered by family and friends for his work ethic. He was a member of the laborer’s union, a lifetime member of the NRA, and a founding member of the Gonvick Pumpkin Growers.
