Alice Mae Kortan, 83, of Bagley died peacefully on Thursday, June 8, 2023, at McIntosh Senior Living, in McIntosh, surrounded by her children.

Alice was born on October 21, 1939, to Thomas and Stella (Swenson) Schacher in Fosston MN.

She met Vernon Kortan at a dance in Pine Lake. They got married on July 21, 1956, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Bagley, and then purchased the family farm from Vernon’s parents. Alice worked alongside her husband farming in Falk Township, Bagley, MN for many years until Vernon’s passing in 2001. In 1999, Vernon and Alice were named Red River Valley Farmer and Homemaker of the year. Alice also worked in the kitchen at Bagley Independent School District. She continued to live on the farm until 2019 when she moved into Otterkill Garden Apartments, where she resided until February 2023 when she entered McIntosh Senior Living due to illness.

Alice was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and St. Ann’s Guild, Bagley. She was also, involved in AMPI Women’s Dairy, Homemakers and Bagley Senior Center.

Alice enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She loved fishing, camping, dancing, playing cards and games with her husband, friends and family, especially Aggravation and Rummikub. She also loved gardening and baking. She made the best chocolate cake and chocolate chip cookies. She spent time with her grandchildren teaching them how to make her famous dill pickles and baking cookies together.

Alice is survived by her two daughters – Carolyn (Bob) Hultman; Louise (Larry) Walker; two sons – David (Tammy) Kortan; Joel (Linda) Kortan; all of Bagley. 11 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband - Vernon; Parents – Thomas and Stella Schacher; Grandchild – Perry Kortan; Great Grandchildren – Faith Burley and Benton Quamme-Kortan.

Funeral Mass for Alice

St. Joseph's Catholic Church 215 Central St W, Bagley, MN 56621, USA

A visitation will be held on Thursday, June 15, 2023, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service with Father John Melkies Sulvakeen presiding. Interment will be at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Bagley, Minnesota.
